Personal
Statement: I believe in the mutuality of healthy
relationships, in which people are able to have their own needs met as
well as to respond to the needs of their loved ones. Respect, empathy,
validation, and reflection are essential components of a successful
therapeutic relationship and form the cornerstone of my
practice.
My style of working with clients is an active one, in which I listen
intently and also provide feedback, encouragement, and at times
suggestions for alternative ways of viewing, reacting, or behaving in
response to challenging situations or experiences that the clients are
facing in their lives.
When working with children, I always include the parents as well,
preferring to combine individual child sessions, when indicated, with
parent and/or family sessions. I believe that when children have
difficulties, the parents and children must work together to solve
them.
What I have found in my many years of practice is that, when people's
feelings are validated and understood, they are much more likely to be
able to change their behaviors. One of the reasons that people get
stuck in maladaptive behavior patterns is that they feel
misunderstood, disrespected, or somehow unseen or unaccepted for who
they are as people. Through the experience of exploring one's feelings
and experiences and feeling heard, understood, and accepted, it is
much easier to let go of old, maladaptive behavior patterns and find
more effective solutions to one's relationship challenges.
